There were four main points.

1. God loves you

He read the verses underneath the point. John 3:16 and Romans 5:8. They weren’t too difficult to understand. While he was still a sinner in rebellion against God, God had reached down and saved him. Not just physically, but God was ready to rescue Paul spiritually as well.

2. You are a sinner

The bluntness of the words on the page was a punch to his pride. So hard to accept. He’d always thought of himself as a man sacrificing himself to a great cause, the fight against cancer, but would he still fight if the job came with no salary and no prestige? No, not him. Selfishness permeated everything he did. Selfishness had made him turn a blind eye to Wendy’s discontent in their marriage. He’d assumed Wendy would stick with him no matter what. He snorted, the sound loud in the room. Wendy hadn’t been fooled. She knew there wasn’t much substance under his polished exterior.

His selfishness ran deep. Having a daughter like Lauren was great because she was easy and made him look good. He’d prefer not to have to put in the hard work with Ben. His attitude to his father was the same. He wanted a perfect father. If Russ wasn’t perfect, then Paul wasn’t sure he wanted to invest the time. Selfish, selfish, selfish.

And, of course, he hadn’t given much thought to the sin of all sins. He’d lived as though God hadn’t existed. As though he was irrelevant. He’d preferred to believe silly myths about God rather than check out the truth of them, because he didn’t want God in his life. Didn’t want someone who commanded his respect and obedience. All he’d wanted was a universe where everything was at his beck and call.

He glanced at the next point and the two verses.

3. God’s remedy for sin
